Ancient coins of Song Dynasty unearthed in Pinyi County, Linyi.
Local residents of East Bianqiao Village, Bianqiao Town, Pingyi County in Linyi City unearthed an ancient money pit stored with huge numbers of ancient coins when they were digging the foundation of a new building on the afternoon of August 22.
According to identification by the antique appraiser, these coins were minted in Song Dynasty (960-1279 AD) and have a history of more than one thousand years. Not surrounded by any kinds of ancient tombs, the 1.2m-wide and 1m-long money pit was identified as an ancient cellar which was particularly dug to store the coins, reporter learned from Wang Xiangchen, the curator of Pinyi Museum.
Being identified as valuable historical and cultural relics, the large quantities of ancient coins unearthed in Pinyi, Linyi will contribute a lot to the research of China’s History of Coins.
