Official documents on nominating 11 sites as new UNESCO Global Geoparks unveiled by UNESCO Global Geoparks Council.
April 15, 2019 (Linyi China) -- The UNESCO Global Geoparks Council unveiled official documents on nominating 11 sites as new UNESCO Global Geoparks for the period 2019-2022. According to the documents, Yimengshan (Mount Yimeng) in Linyi City, east China’s Shandong Province is listed in these nominations.
In accordance with Section 5.5 of the Operational Guidelines for UNESCO Global Geoparks as approved by the 38th session of the General Conference (38 C/Resolution 23), these nominations decided upon by the UNESCO Global Geoparks Council are submitted to the Executive Board for its endorsement.
The territory of Yimengshan is located in Linyi City, east China’s Shandong Province and has maximum elevation of 1,156 m. The area lies in the uplift belt of western Shandong Province. It mainly consists of north-west trending basement folds and ductile shear belts.
During its long geological evolution, various geological landscapes were formed. The geoheritage of international significance is the oldest strata in north China. It represents China’s only komatiite with spinifex texture and is one of the few greenstone belts in the world. This tonalite-trondhjemite-granodiorite (TTG) and potash granite of different ages reflects stages of early crust formation and is also the biggest kimberlite-type diamond mine in Asia with the biggest ore reserve and its old mining site.
