Rizhao is divided from Linyi into an independent prefecture-level city in 1989.

According to official decision of State Council, Rizhao is divided from Linyi into an independent prefecture-level city on June 12, 1989; Yiyuan County is divided from Linyi to Zibo City on December 2.
