Linyi hosts group wedding to revive traditional Chinese marriage customs

Sixty newlyweds and ten couples celebrating their golden wedding anniversaries gathered at Wuzhouhu Square in Linyi City, east China's Shandong Province on the morning of Sept 28, for a group wedding ceremony under the theme "Family and Nation in Celebration, Love Across Yimeng."

Held along the banks of the Yihe River in Linyi, the ceremony combined a minimalist Chinese-style ritual with local authorities' ongoing efforts to reform outdated marriage customs and ease the financial burden long placed on newlyweds and their families.

Clad in traditional red wedding attire, the 60 couples exchanged vows before family members, civic officials and onlookers in a ceremony organizers described as both solemn and restrained. The proceedings drew on classical Chinese wedding rites while incorporating contemporary elements, reflecting local efforts to revive traditional culture in ways that resonate with younger generations.

Ten couples marking their 50th anniversaries — known in Chinese tradition as "golden weddings" — joined the newlyweds on stage as honored participants, symbolizing the enduring nature of marriage across generations.
