Feixian wood industry moves up value chain

Feixian county in Linyi is raising the ceiling for its wood industry by moving beyond traditional panel production into high-end customization, factory-direct retail, overseas sales and digital manufacturing.

The county has an annual panel capacity of about 23 million cubic meters, with wood enterprises above designated size generating nearly 50 billion yuan ($6.9 billion) in output. A complete chain now links veneer, lumber and panel production with flooring, doors, cabinets, furniture and whole-home customization.

At Shandong Jinbaiwei Home Furnishing Co Ltd, premium materials including leather, silk, linen and cashmere are used in customized furniture, while some whole-home projects can cost more than one million yuan. Its design team of more than 40 people reflects a shift from volume manufacturing to design-led value creation.

Feixian's competitiveness is also rooted in its supply system, which covers chemicals, machinery, heat and steam, logistics and other supporting services. Local firms are exploring a "front shop, back factory" model, using livestreaming and direct sales to cut distribution costs while offering competitive products.

Overseas markets are becoming another growth driver. Furniture makers are running multiple production lines and exporting to Europe and North America through foreign trade partners and cross-border e-commerce channels.

Feixian has also completed digital upgrades at 20 enterprises and built more than 50 digital application scenarios, supporting a greener, smarter and more brand-oriented industry.
