First secretaries stationed in villages across Tancheng county, Linyi in East China's Shandong province, have focused on residents' pressing needs this year, addressing problems on the ground and delivering results that matter to villagers.
In Xiliugou village, Quanyuan town, Li Gongzheng, a first secretary sent by the Linyi women's federation, delivered 69,000 yuan ($9,700) in donations to the family of a villager surnamed Yang who had fallen ill. Part came from donations he mobilized among Party members and residents, part from support he secured from charitable enterprises. He raised the funds for surgery from village lanes to factory floors, tracking contributions ranging from tens of yuan to more than a thousand. "This money is a lifeline. We never expected the first secretary to treat our family's problem as his own," the patient's relative said.
To address childcare difficulties during the summer holiday, first secretaries in Gangshang town set up the "Childcare Class," opening five teaching sites and working with volunteers from Qingdao University of Technology to provide regular public childcare services. They also coordinated with the county's traffic police, culture and tourism bureau, library and maternal and child health hospital to offer courses on traffic safety, classical Chinese reading, English, music, art and mental health, and organized themed activities including storytelling about revolutionary history. Over one summer, children learned new skills and made new friends.
In Chenbu village, Lizhuang town, workers at Qingxuan Crafts were working overtime to fill orders, with finished handicrafts soon to be packed for shipment overseas. "The first secretary brought foreign buyers right to our doorstep," said Guo Yingshuai, the company's head. The village's craft enterprises had good products but struggled to find markets. Li Haibin, a first secretary sent by the municipal audit bureau, drew on his home institution's resources to arrange a visit by a Dutch buyer, who praised the quality and craftsmanship and signed a long-term supply agreement on the spot. With orders rising, workers' incomes have followed.
Following the principle of doing what residents need, the county's 109 first secretaries have delivered more than 260 practical services covering industrial development, infrastructure and free health consultations, secured more than 61 million yuan ($8.5 million) in support funds, held 34 summer public childcare sessions reaching more than 2,000 children left behind by migrant-worker parents, and distributed financial aid and school supplies to 142 incoming university students.
