International students from Linyi University recently visited Mengyin County to experience the world’s distinctive Daigu landform and tour the Daigu Scenic Area Museum.
A guide explained that the Gu landform is unique to south-central Shandong, especially the Yimeng Mountain area. Shaped by crustal uplift, long-term erosion and sedimentation, the magnificent Daigu landscape mainly distributes at high altitudes and lines along mountain ridges.
Having learned about Daigu’s history and culture at the museum, international students were eager to see the iconic landform in person.
Covering 17,000 square meters, Gushang Grassland offers a panoramic overlook of the famous 72 Gu landforms in the Yimeng region. Impressed by the stunning natural scenery, the students were amazed by the dramatic transformation of the once barren mountain wilderness and curious about local people’s efforts behind the changes.
The group interviewed Gong Maotian, a Model Laborer of Shandong Province.
Gong recalled that the area was desolate and treeless when he first arrived. Together with his wife, they spent four winters transporting soil by handcart to improve the land, before gradually planting trees and developing mountain orchards.
In the early years, they overcame shortages of funds, soil and water. Setting a leading example, Gong encouraged local villagers to grow peaches and other fruits, greatly boosting rural incomes and helping residents live affluent lives.
He shared that wandering the mountains eases his tiredness and lifts his spirits. What he values most is the close bond with villagers and the sense of honor in leading them to prosperity.
The field trip allowed international students to appreciate Linyi’s rare geological scenery, ecological achievements and touching stories of rural revitalization.
