Mengyin honey peaches rely on home-bred varieties after 40 years of upgrading

After 40 years of continuous seed innovation, Mengyin County's 800,000-mu peach orchards adopt fully domestic independent varieties, forming a complete industrial chain with self-controlled germplasm resources.

In the early development stage, most peach varieties planted in Mengyin were imported overseas, which led to aging strains and unstable fruit quality over time. Over the past four decades, the county has built long-term cooperative ties with 27 national agricultural research institutes including Zhengzhou Fruit Research Institute of CAAS.

More than 120 independently-bred peach varieties are widely cultivated across local orchards, accounting for over 95 percent of all planted strains. A full industrial system covering seedling breeding, standardized planting, deep processing and e-commerce sales takes shape. Mengyin's peach planting area and annual output rank first among all county-level regions nationwide, creating a billion-yuan characteristic agricultural pillar industry driving rural income growth.
