Hedong district in Linyi, East China's Shandong province, held community outreach activities on disaster prevention and mitigation on Oct 13, the 37th International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction, under this year's theme of "building a safe and resilient home."
At Sanjiang Lingxiu community in Jiuqu subdistrict, the district emergency management bureau joined forces with fire and other departments to hold science lectures. Focusing on housing, households and communities as the "smallest units" of disaster response, the sessions covered fire safety, home escape and emergency self-rescue, guiding residents to identify household hazards and master evacuation and mutual aid skills.
Staff also distributed outreach materials to passing residents, explaining practical knowledge on fire escape, earthquake evacuation and hazard identification in plain language and answering questions on daily disaster prevention and emergency response.

Jia Xiangming, Party secretary of the community, said he hoped departments and the community would hold more such joint activities to improve residents' disaster response capabilities. Yang Baoju, chief of the disaster relief section of the district emergency management bureau, said the aim was to guide residents to learn disaster prevention knowledge, check for hidden hazards and master self-rescue skills, shifting from passive relief to active prevention and building safety lines layer by layer from individuals and families to society as a whole.
