Residents and students joined a water culture education event along the Yihe River in Linyi, East China's Shandong province, on Oct 24, touring a water culture exhibition hall and the Xiaobudong rubber dam, a major water control project on the river.
The program, part of the city's Mother River, Happy River campaign, included an ecology class on the river's biodiversity and treatment results given by a forestry engineer, a water-saving quiz, and hands-on experiments on water purification.
Guides explained the rubber dam's functions in flood control, water storage and ecological regulation. Participants also viewed a film on the river's water culture and a demonstration of smart water management systems.

"I've lived by the Yihe River for decades and watched the channel turn from murky to clear, the banks from wasteland to scenery," one long-time resident said.
The city said it will continue public water culture programs to build consensus on river protection and integrated development of water culture, ecology and economy.
