At Fangjiazhuang village in Changlu town, Mengyin county, Linyi, East China's Shandong province, autumn brings bountiful harvests from small household vegetable gardens, where villagers are busy picking bright red chili peppers with joy on their faces.
In recent years, the town has guided villagers to make use of spaces in front of and behind their houses and in courtyards to create small vegetable gardens, in response to problems such as piled-up debris and overgrown weeds that affected village appearance.
Combining aesthetics with practicality, the gardens have eliminated sanitation dead corners, beautified the living environment and enriched villagers' vegetable baskets. When vegetables ripen, villagers harvest fresh, pollution-free greens on their doorsteps for their own tables and for sale at markets.
