From tons to grams: How Linyi's freeze-dried produce gains value

2026-07-24

In Taiping subdistrict of Hedong district, Linyi, a freeze-drying production site covering just 30 square meters can produce 140 metric tons of freeze-dried fruits and vegetables a year, generating more than 30 million yuan ($4.2 million) in output value. The case highlights how freeze-drying technology is transforming Linyi's fruit and vegetable industry, allowing local products to move from being sold by the ton to being valued by the gram.

The transformation is backed by Linyi's strong agricultural foundation. As a major fruit and vegetable production area in China, Linyi is home to abundant agricultural resources and a well-established processing industry. However, large-scale production did not always translate into higher returns, as many products were previously sold through primary processing with limited added value.

Freeze-drying technology has opened a new path up the value chain. By using vacuum freeze-drying methods, fruits and vegetables can retain their nutrients, color and flavor. In Sihe village, Pingyi county, farmer Chen Cuicui built a freeze-drying facility to process local products such as hawthorn and honeysuckle, increasing profits and creating jobs for local women. Today, Linyi has developed into a major freeze-dried fruit and vegetable production base, with products reaching overseas markets.

The shift represents the transformation of agricultural products from ordinary commodities into higher-value goods through the use of technology, branding and innovation. Linyi's experience shows how agricultural cities can create greater value by upgrading traditional industries.
