Autumn in Linyi: A season to enjoy mountains, ancient culture

September in Linyi, Shandong province brings crisp autumn air and golden landscapes, making it the ideal time for mountain climbing, exploration of local heritage, and evening strolls. The seemingly boundless Yimeng Mountains unveil their most spectacular scenery, with each core scenic area offering a unique experience.

At Yimeng Mountain Guimeng Scenic Area, visitors can ascend the 1,156-meter Guimeng Peak, the highest point in the range. The area is home to the world's largest mountain carving — the 218-m Mengshan Immortal — and the longest cliff-side plank road in northern China. After a spell of autumn rain, seas of clouds frequently appear, creating a breathtaking vista alongside the area's Taoist cultural heritage.

For nature lovers, Yimeng Mountain Yunmeng Scenic Area boasts 98 percent forest coverage and is renowned as a "natural oxygen bar". Its streams and waterfalls offer a refreshing escape amid September's cooler climes, making it a perfect destination for family outings and wellness retreats.

Linyi, historically known as Langya, also offers a journey through 3,000 years of culture. The Langya Ancient City stages over 100 daily performances, including the immersive epic Guoxiu Langya.

Visitors can explore the Former Residence of Wang Xizhi (303-361), the legendary calligrapher's childhood home, or visit the Museum of Bamboo Slips from the Yinqueshan Han Dynasty (206 BC-AD 220) Tomb, where Sun Tzu's The Art of War and the since-lost Sun Bin's Art of War were unearthed together — a discovery hailed as a milestone in archaeology.
