Miaoshan village in Luoxi subdistrict, Linyi, East China's Shandong province, has set up a handicraft flower-arranging workshop to create jobs for older residents and women who stay in the village, addressing the difficulty of finding nearby employment.

The village committee first sorted out idle assets and comprehensively upgraded a disused nursing home site, cleaning the area, installing lighting and repairing damaged ground surface, turning the old site into a clean, well-equipped workshop.

To choose a project that would be sustainable and quick to deliver results, the village's Party branch and committee reached out to higher authorities for resources and visited neighboring villages, including Zhangcenshi and Jiantou, to study workshop operating models. After comparison, they settled on handicraft flower arranging, which has a low entry threshold, a short learning curve and stable demand, and built a steady cooperation chain.

The workshop now runs on a regular basis, with more than ten older residents employed steadily. Villagers sit together making handicrafts and learning from one another, turning idle time into income.

The village said it will continue to develop the workshop, optimize its operating model, broaden cooperation channels and bring in more idle labor, using practical steps to improve livelihoods and advance rural revitalization.
