Linyi in East China's Shandong province held a "Yimeng spirit at Shandong University" event and its first Linyi Day at the university's central campus in Jinan on Oct 13 and 14, a move that combined spirit promotion, city marketing and talent recruitment.

Shandong University and Linyi share deep historical roots. Linyi is the core birthplace of the Yimeng spirit and also where Shandong University's revolutionary heritage took shape. In 1945, the Shandong provincial government founded "Linyi Shandong University" in the Yimeng revolutionary base area, and its first president, Li Chengzhi, was a native of Linyi. In 1951, the school merged into the National Shandong University, bringing the Yimeng spirit's revolutionary gene into the university's lineage.

Today, more than 1,000 students from Linyi study at Shandong University, more than 2,000 of its graduates have settled in Linyi, and 33 of its distinguished teachers have served in temporary science and technology posts in the city. Over the past five years, Linyi enterprises have carried out nearly 100 industry-university-research cooperation projects with the university, drawing more than 300 million yuan ($42.25 million) in social investment.

On the evening of Oct 13, a themed presentation titled "The Yimeng Spirit Passed Down Through Generations" was held. Opening with the melody of "Yimeng Mountain Minor," more than ten programs including "Sending Troops to Shandong," "Roots in Yimeng, Youth at Shandong University," "The Old Revolutionary Area Remains Young and Vigorous" and "High Mountains, Long Rivers" were staged through lectures, situational drama, and song and dance, recalling how the people of Yimeng supported the army and made sacrifices for the country during the war years.

Linyi has grown into a regional central city in southern Shandong and northern Jiangsu, and is moving toward its goals of becoming a provincial sub-central city and a city with a GDP of one trillion yuan, making it more dependent than ever on science, education and talent.

On the morning of Oct 14, the launch ceremony of Shandong University Linyi Day and a recruitment presentation were held. Key enterprises from Linyi promoted themselves to students, and the city released a list of key projects for the 2026 "open bidding for key challenges" program. Shandong University and the Linyi municipal government signed a strategic cooperation framework agreement, and the university's cooperation and development department signed a science and technology education agreement with the Linyi education bureau, with a batch of talent and technology cooperation projects also signed.

A large on-site job fair was held in front of the university's Zhixin Building, with 61 Linyi enterprises, five colleges based in the city and five municipal hospitals recruiting for posts in intelligent manufacturing, biomedicine and modern logistics. A policy consultation area explained the city's talent introduction and industrial support policies, while specialty zones for quality products, food tasting and interactive photo spots introduced the city's appeal to students.
